VOC Measurements Eastern North Atlantic June-July 2022

Overview:

Six weeks of continuous, high time resolution measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were made by a proton transfer reaction mass spectrometer with a coupled gas chromatography (GC) front-end at the ARM Eastern North Atlantic site during the Aerosol Growth in the Eastern North Atlantic campaign. We report the time series of 12 molecules in parts per trillion at 5 minute averaging time as well as isoprene from GC samples. Molecules include both biogenic and anthropogenic species that contribute to the total measured VOC at the site.

Abstract:

We report the time series of 12 molecules in parts per trillion at 5 minute averaging time as well as isoprene from GC samples. Molecules include both biogenic and anthropogenic species that contribute to the total measured VOC at the site. 

Purpose:

The purpose of this dataset is to inform our understanding of the sources, composition, and concentration of volatile organic compounds measured at the ARM Eastern North Atlantic site. 

Data Usage:All molecules are reported in parts per trillion. Isoprene is reported from in situ GC PTR-MS measurements collected sporadically (2-4x/day). All other molecules are reported at a 5 minute averaging time. All data is background-subtracted. Time points when the ambient data was not above background are left as negative. Time points when no ambient data exists for a molecule are NaN. Data of individual molecules can be used for time series or used to determine average concentration of the molecule at the site during the study period. Data should not be used to determine the contribution of a particular molecule to the total reported VOC measured at the site. All 5 minute averaged VOC data should be used in conjunction with the provided flags to filter out periods of pollution. There are two equivalent time stamps – one is in Matlab serial time for the data to be easily read into matlab and the other is in fractional day of year, both local time at the site.

Data Quality:
Attribute Accuracy: Uncertainties for all reported molecules are based on the uncertainty in the calibration standard. This is most commonly +/- 5% and up to +/- 10%.
Positional Accuracy: No formal positional accuracy tests were conducted.
Consistency and Completeness Report: Time points when the ambient data was not above background are left as negative. Time points when no ambient data exists (instrument offline, collecting GCs, zeroing, or calibrating) for a molecule are NaN. Time points that did not pass QA/QC due to documented contamination are NaN.
Factor Affecting the Research: All data should be interpreted in the context of existing ARM measurements at the site for weather or cloudiness conditions. The site is affected by local pollution, often due to the airport runway next to the site, in addition to cars driving on the road on the other side of the site. Data should be interpreted in the context of the flags for pollution and grass-cutting. The pollution flag assumes that any time points when the VOC C7, C8, and C9 aromatics are above baseline is indicative of local pollution. Pollution flag might continue to be revised and reuploaded until data can be utilized by non-AGENA people in summer 2024.
