Magnaprobe Snow Depths for the 2022 SALVO Campaign

Overview:

The springtime, surface-albedo transition in the Alaskan Arctic and the forcings that determine the duration and nature of that transition are the focus of our Snow ALbedo eVOlution (SALVO I & II) campaign. The SALVO team are assessing the “whys” and “how longs” of the stages of the spring melt during which albedo values drop from 0.8 to 0.1, the largest and most significant change of the year. The near-shore location of the ARM NSA observatory makes this an ideal place to investigate these melt stages.

Abstract:

Purpose:

Snow depth data was collected to monitor the evolution of the springtime snowpack.

Data Usage:Spatial resolution of depth measurements were 1-m over a 200-m transect. Coordinates available for 0-m and 200-m. There are 201 points.

Data Quality:
Attribute Accuracy: Potential over-probing, and relocation uncertainty theoretically resulted in an absolute depth accuracy of about ±1.5 cm, and a differential accuracy between two surveys of about ±2 cm. However, frequently, the probe was inserted in the same hole in the snow from the previous survey, increasing the differential accuracy to better than ±1 cm.
